Here at Craighead we have considered the most effective way of ‘teaching’ very seriously. Instead of the traditional adult led process of setting out activities and asking children to come and complete them we follow a child led approach.
Our environment is very carefully considered to allow children independence and to take ownership of their own learning. Resources are often natural and open ended meaning the child can determine the use, rather than it being pre- determined. Our playrooms open out onto the outdoor environment, allowing free flow play for most of the day.
The role of the adult is varied.. they could be supporting a child in using a new resource, encouraging a child’s curiosity, modelling new words and phrases, challenging a child’s thinking, suggesting a different way of using something or standing back to observe the learning taking place.
We follow government guidelines such as Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) and link learning experiences to curriculum documents such as Pre-birth to Three, Building the Ambition and Curriculum for Excellence.
A nurturing ethos is so important to us all and we create this through our relationships. We promote child’s confidence, resilience and independence in all that we do.
Food is such an important part of the nurturing environment we provide at Craighead. We prepare nutritional and balanced meals and snacks every day. These are included within our fees. All our meals and snacks are home made in our kitchen by our qualified cooks. We use fresh local produce including meat from Sorn Mains and fruit and vegetables from Spittal, Auchinleck.
We prepare our menus using guidance from Setting the Table and Food Matters. These are reviewed by children and staff on an on going basis.
We can cater for any allergies and dietary requirements.
Our menus are rotated over a four week period.
At mealtimes we provide whole milk or water to drink.
Fresh drinking water is available in all rooms throughout the day.
